Individuals with unique skill sets, a proven record of outstanding achievements, and an international reputation in a key field may be invited to apply for permanent residence. The Australian government is actively seeking the best and brightest talent in the following priority sectors:

Individuals with exceptional talent in fields such as entrepreneurship, investment, athletics, and the creative arts may also qualify, if nominated by a state, territory, or federal government agency.

  • Detail skills and contributions that would benefit Australia, including their potential economic, social, cultural, academic, artistic, or sporting impact
  • Have the ability to secure employment or establish themselves in their field with ease
  • Meet Australia’s health and character assessments
  • Secure a nomination from an eligible Australian individual or organization within their field, or from a state, territory, or federal government agency
  • Submit an Expression of Interest for assessment

NIV Eligibility

Eligibility for the NIV is determined based on evidence of exceptional and outstanding achievements in one of the following categories:

Academic or research professionals with a global reputation for expertise in their field.

Key indicators of achievement include:

  • Recipient of a national-level research grant
  • PhD with significant academic influence or thought leadership
  • Recent publications in top-ranked journals
  • High h-index reflecting research impact
  • Research-based degree from a globally recognized university
  • Recent keynote speaker at high-profile international conferences

Established or emerging entrepreneurs demonstrating entrepreneurial success, particularly linked to innovation hubs in Australia.

Key indicators of achievement include:

  • Evidence of entrepreneurial activities likely to result in the commercialisation of a product or service or the development of a business in Australia
  • Recognized intellectual property, such as holding international patents

Investors active in the start-up ecosystem, contributing both capital and expertise to innovative ventures.

Key indicators of achievement include:

  • Proven track record as a significant ‘Angel’ investor, supporting successful innovative businesses

Professional athletes and creatives who enhance Australia’s international reputation in their field.

Key indicators of achievement include:

  • Recipient of extraordinary sports or arts awards and honors at an international level
  • Internationally recognized athlete with achievements in major national or international competitions
  • Acclaimed artist with a sustained record of highly regarded work, honors, and accolades

NIV Priorities

The Expression of Interest and visa applications are evaluated based on the following priority order:

  1. Priority 1: Recipient of top-of-field international awards
  2. Priority 2: Nomination and business case from a relevant government agency
  3. Priority 3: Demonstration of exceptional achievements in a Tier 1 sector
  4. Priority 4: Demonstration of exceptional achievements in a Tier 2 sector
